The American Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), explains that some plants may pose a threat to cats and dogs. Hence we have compiled a list of some low maintenance and non-toxic plants that you can incorporate into your residence to instantly add cheer.
1. Spider plant (Chlorophytum comosum)
Spider plants are one of the easiest decorative greens to care for, and can even be a success with beginners.
The Chlorophytum comosum is sturdy, safe and will sprout dozens of shoots that are easy to prune and propagate - this means that upon purchasing an adult plant, you will definitely grow more of these in no time! This plant is also commonly known as the St.Bernard’s lily, spider ivy, and ribbon plant; a flowering plant species.
The best feature unique to this plant is that it is not temperature or light sensitive. This means that you may place this plant wherever you desire and it should thrive. All the plant requires is fair amounts of water. However, one should take note that the soil should not be over-watered thus, needs some drying out before watering again.
It is also wise to hang or place these plants away from the reach of your pet, as its stems could be enticing!
2. Areca or Golden Palm (Dypsis lutescens)
Aside from adding a tropical feel to any home, this plant also offers better indoor air quality! If you have some extra space, the Areca/Golden Palm is the plant to opt for.
This plant is extremely easy to maintain, as all it needs is watering often enough to keep the soil lightly damp - the plant needs to dry slightly between watering. One should place this place next to a natural light source as it loves sufficient indirect light.
Those looking to use this plant to brighten one’s home should take note, that this indoor tree can grow pretty tall, up to 7ft high. It is wise to purchase a larger pot to house the plant considering its potential height.
3. Wandering Jew (Tradescantia Zebrina)
This plant has a peculiar name, however, it is perfect for hanging near a window or placed at a table’s edge for the plant to cascade as it matures. The plant is an easy and fast growing plant appreciated for its bold colouration!
The Wandering Jew is an effortless plant to grow. It doesn't mind the occasional under-watering but one should never wait too long or the stems may eventually go limp. The plant does appreciate moist soil, not to mention a location with some direct sunlight.
It is not advisable to place the plant under harsh afternoon rays, as its magnificent leaves might burn if the heat is too harsh!
4. Sword Ferns (Nephrolepis exaltata)
This plant is popular for its air-purifying properties and not only helps to rid the household of harmful toxins but can also help to humidify a room naturally. One will spot this plant easily, due to its mass of fern-like lush green foliage.
This plant will thrive in highly moisturised interiors with indirect light. It is advisable to occasionally mist the plant and place it in a cool location!
5. African Violets (Saintpaulia)
This flowering plant is for those of you that would love to see blossoms throughout one’s home! These bright flowers will happily bloom all year round, provided it is given enough attention. This plant will definitely spice-up your tabletops as well as mantels!
Most people are unaware but, this plant needs to be kept in a warm location where it can receive adequate sunlight. One should also ensure to keep the soil lightly moist yet loose for better drainage purposes.
One should take extra caution in ensuring that the roots of this plant aren't allowed to sit in soggy soil as the African Violet is susceptible to Crown Rot caused by the Phytophthora fungus. Crown Rot is fatal as it attacks the root and most notably the crown of the African Violet!
6. Guiana Chestnut (Pachira Aquatica)
The Guiana Chestnut or commonly known as the money tree grows optimally near wetlands and swamps. This plant is suitable for those with asthma and lung issues or even for those living in a vicinity in which the air quality is poor as the plant is able to reduce toxins such as formaldehyde from the air!
This attractive plant loves water, thus, one must ensure that it is moistened consistently. You should also take note to water the plant just until the water starts to leak out of its essential drainage points not to mention, one should never let it stand in water.
Additionally one should place the plant in an area that is bright but away from direct light, aside from that one should also remember to consistently turn the pot every time you water the plant for even growth as well as foliation.
